Summer 2017 Weekly Roundup: Week Eleven

This week has taught me how difficult it is to manage seven series when half of the week consisted of being drunk in a club or hungover in my dorm. Nonetheless, I’ve done my absolute best to keep this Weekly Roundup on time and of the quality you’ve come to expect. Although it’s been a haze for the majority of this week, each show has continued to impact me in their own ways. Neither a genuine or backhanded compliment, memorable will always be the word to describe this season and week eleven doesn’t lose that title. We may be reaching the conclusion stage of Summer 2017 as a season, but apparently not everyone got the memo as some episodes continued to delve deep into the heart of their series. With surprisingly detailed fight sequences in shows I’d never predict and narratives attempting to ease off, this week has been a difficult one to digest.

My Anime Journey #2: Angel Beats!

Having only watched Lucky Star, a fluffy show lacking any real impact, I set out to watch something a bit more narrative reliant. If I recall correctly, I took to forums and discussions in an attempt to branch out from my first show. My love for complex and hard-hitting stories clearly hit home here as Angel Beats! still remains one of the strongest shows I’ve seen. From its hard hitting narrative, dark undertones and incredibly inventive soundtrack, the strength of each element really come together to build a genuinely impressive story. That being said, this series isn’t without its flaws and my ignorance definitely affected my views on the show at the time.

Summer 2017 Weekly Roundup: Week Ten

Depending on what shows I’ve seen by the time this goes up, this could be a very different style of the Weekly Roundup. So this has been one of the most hectic weeks in a long time, moving into my dorm for University hasn’t left much time at all for anime. As of now I’m writing the introduction in advance and this week seems to be a pretty strong one. Even though some of my personal favourites aren’t performing quite on form and the ones I love to slate are trying to redeem themselves, it’s not been a terrible time so far.

Summer 2017 Weekly Roundup: Week Nine

Let it be known that Week Nine of Summer 2017 was dedicated to providing some top quality Maid Service. More so than ever before, this week had some incredible heights and some catastrophic lows. As a whole, it’s been a pretty strong week when the shows all balance out. While that all sounds alright, that does leave some of these shows in a very bad spot for the latter end of the season. Although we’ve seen some of the best individual sequences of the season, a small portion of quality can’t always make up for an all-round dull episode. Thankfully, not every series fell to this effect (I’m looking at you Welcome to the Ballroom) so let’s delve into Week Nine of the summer season!

Summer 2017 Weekly Roundup: Week Eight

This week has been a hectic one for me outside of my hobby as an anime enthusiast which is why this one’s a little later than usual, sorry about that. Fret not though, every episode of the shows you expect are here this week and there is a hell of a lot to say! This appears to be the week of change, some going as drastic as to removing entire members of their main cast and others taking on a different structure altogether. Although it really hasn’t been the strongest week this season, there has been an incredibly high number of notable sequences and a couple scenes I could script an entire Piece-by-Piece episode on. Drama has been the theme and it’s been an emotionally exhaustive week for anime. Combining that with my mentally taxing preparation for University (which is starting very soon by the way), the word length on this one is going to be one for the record books.

Summer 2017 Weekly Roundup: Week Seven

We are officially past the halfway mark and most of these shows are still going strong! As always, no edition of the Weekly Roundup shows an entirely perfect week but some of the episodes that aired definitely deserved a near flawless score. Although these little introductory paragraphs are proving more difficult to write with each edition, I’m excited to share what I thought of this week. With AHO-Girl focusing on side characters, Knights & Magic finally getting to the point we’ve been waiting for and Made in Abyss getting much darker than expected, it’s been an eventful week.

My Anime Journey #1: Lucky Star

Believe it or not, the very first anime I had watched (excluding shows watched as a child like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh) was in fact the infamously cutesy show Lucky Star. Whether or not you see this as a positive way to venture into the medium, it’s needless to say that I was definitely thrown into the deep end. Being aged around 14 at the time, there was nothing I had seen before that was even remotely similar in any aspect. From the adorably ‘smushy’ character designs to the complete awareness at its own lack of substance, Lucky Star certainly was an interesting doorway into my anime journey.
