Often the visuals of a film are what make them recognisable epics that creep up in every “Top 10” list that comes out. With technology developing as fast as it is, new cameras and CGI can sell a film on its own and soundtrack seems to become more overlooked. That’s why I’m going to do a rundown of five memorable film soundtracks.
It was inevitable that a dedicated article to the fan-dubbed genre of “Cute Girls Doing Cute Things” would surface on this website. After more than one episode of the Truly Trash Podcast revolving around the concept (my piece on Relaxing Anime subtly trying to weave it in), I am passionate about the Slice of Life genre. That’s all inclusive from emotional series to laid back ones. However, I often find that because these two are sorted into the same category of Slice of Life, the more laidback series are often pushed aside or ridiculed for their inherent structure. With this piece, I’m hoping to blur the bridge that the anime community frequently puts in place and recommend five of my favourite shows where the Cute Girls doing Cute Things formula is used effectively. Oh and I’ll also be trying out some new scoring systems for the sake of these multi-show articles.
Everyone remembers the first anime they watched, either a childhood memory of Saturday morning Pokemon or delving deep into the medium as a teenager with shows like Full Metal Alchemist or Dragonball Z. First impressions are the most important factor when trying something different and watching a sub-par show can leave a poor taste in your mouth and turn you away from anime forever. Or you can be like me and enjoy watching terrible shows because you know nobody else will. Regardless, I’ve put together a list of shows that I think are perfect for newcomers to anime.
In what has probably been the most stressful month of my life, I’ve realised how there are certain shows that are perfect for forgetting the world you’re in and completely relaxing. Where some like to read a book by a fireplace on a rainy day, I prefer shutting out all social media and focusing solely on one of these five shows. Whether it be their breathtaking scenery with incredible attention to detail or cleverly crafted atmospheres connecting with the sound design of the scene, these are five great shows for relaxing.
